South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and leaders of the City’s Common Council gave an update Wednesday night on affordable housing projects in the southeast neighborhood.
The City partnered with organizations like 466 Works to help revamp the southeast neighborhood with new roads and affordable housing. Some homes are now up for sale.
Mayor Pete said the goal is to make homeownership attainable for people with different economic backgrounds.
“There’s no question that there are still far too many residents in South Bend who are struggling to find affordable housing and in particular, we want to support homeownership because in our market it is more expensive to pay rent on a house than it is to pay mortgage on that same house," he said. "The challenge is barriers like the inability to get credit.”
The City has spent more than one million dollars into the construction ofaffordable housing through 466 Works since 2017.
466 Works hopes to build six more homes in the southeast neighborhood within the next year.
