The Elkhart County Commissioners on Monday agreed to let the Local Emergency Planning Committee apply for a $30,000 Hazardous Material Emergency Preparedness Grant from the state for 2026.

Next year St. Joseph County emergency management officials hope to activate a new feature to send out a sound different than the ones signaling tornadoes, for non-weather emergencies like acts of terrorism, mass shootings and hazardous material disasters.
