Niles Township

Niles Township's board initially voted not to allow any marijuana stores but now could have more than other communities that embraced recreational weed from the start.

The township board must vote on the applications within 60 days but Township Supervisor Marge Durm-Hiatt says it could be late in the year by the time township planning officials approve marijuana business plans.

Niles Township Supervisor Marge Durm-Hiatt doesn't know how many dispensaries ultimately will open but a court challenge has prompted the board to lift restrictions on highway frontage and the number of dispensaries that will be allowed.

The township is one of the last Michiana communities to allow recreational marijuana sales.
