Milton Township Supervisor Eric Renken says it's the city of Niles, rather than the township, that activates township tornado warning sirens, but Friday's deadly tornado formed too quickly for radar detection and warnings.

Next year St. Joseph County emergency management officials hope to activate a new feature to send out a sound different than the ones signaling tornadoes, for non-weather emergencies like acts of terrorism, mass shootings and hazardous material disasters.
