Government funding for private and charter schools will be the topic of an upcoming event hosted by South Bend NAACP. The forum scheduled for Saturday, September 6 will include discussions about recent legislation and the NAACP’s national call for a moratorium on new charter schools.

George Garner, with Indiana University South Bend's Civil Rights Heritage Center, says the building initially housed offices for Black professionals before later serving as a pool hall and recreation center offering then-"seedy" things like a daily numbers game.

South Bend celebrated a major milestone with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Center. The event included a nearly one-mile march.
