Rivers Continue to rise, mayors warn of water dangers

Some schools and roads around the area are closed as rivers continue to rise. About five or six inches of rain in the last 48 hours has put area waterways above flood stage and flooded roads, homes and businesses. Rain is not predicted for Wednesday but could fall again along with snow on Thursday and Friday.

Geoffrey Heidelberger is a meteorologist with the national weather service. “All that rain in the area as well as the combined recent snow melt just started flowing into the rivers and that lead to rapid rises including some that were into major flooding and even above record stage.”

The St. Joseph River is predicted to peak at 12 feet in South Bend, and in Elkhart at around 28 feet late on Thursday or early Friday. The Elkhart River in Goshen is expected to peak at 12 or 13 feet later today. You can watch the water predictions with the National Weather Service hydrology map.

Residents living near Sterling and Indiana Avenues, and near Baugo Creek in Elkhart, and Creekside Mobile Home Park in Goshen have been evacuated. Sandbags are available at the Elkhart and Goshen street departments and several other locations, and for delivery by calling the Elkhart Emergency management department.

An emergency shelter has been activated in Elkhart at Central Christian Church, 418 West Franklin. The City of Goshen has been declared under a state of emergency, but officials want to assure residents the water is still safe to drink from the tap.

Goshen, Elkhart and South Bend’s mayors have all warned residents flood waters can be very dangerous. You should not attempt to walk or drive through flood waters and should heed warning signs and barriers.
