Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese delivered his State of the City address yesterday at the Lerner Theater.

Among the topics covered in the address, Mayor Neese gave special recognition to city emergency first responders for their work during last month’s flooding.

The mayor also touted safety in the city. He said the city has seen a reduction rate of about 21 percent in every major crime indicator across the board, including a “substantial” decrease in homicide. He said the improvement in safety was also reflected in the city’s Public Protection Classification, or PPC,  increasing to the highest rating for any Indiana city or town. A PPC is based on a city’s fire response time, among other factors.

Neese  said the city will continue to focus on projects that improve quality of life in the city, including more city-wide events, like the Elkhart Jazz Festival or the Elkhart Grand Prix. Neese said new building projects such as the aquatics center and the River District Revitalization plan, will also contribute to Elkhart’s quality of life.
