South Bend Accepting Applications For New Lampposts

South Bend residents can now apply for new solar- powered lampposts as part of the Light Up South Bend Initiative.

The Lamppost Lighting Program is meant to improve safety by adding more street lighting throughout South Bend.

The City selected two areas where residents pay less for a lamppost.

They were chosen based on income, number of vacant lots, and need for lighting in the neighborhood.

Homeowners living within these areas pay $50 for one lamppost. The cost is $250 for all other South bend residents.

They can be self-installed on a level area about five feet from the sidewalk.

There is a limit of one lamppost per household and the homeowner is responsible for maintenance.

Applications must be submitted to the division of engineering by August 9th.
