Cooling Centers Available In Michiana

The National Weather Service has issued an EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING that takes effect Thursday afternoon and lasts through Saturday evening. High temperatures will be in the 90's with heat indices from around 105 to 110 degrees.

Cooling centers will be open at Riley and Washington High Schools in South Bend and at the Elkhart Central Fire Station, Thursday and Friday. In Goshen cooling centers will be available Thursday and Friday at the Salvation Army, Maple City Chapel and Goshen Public Library. In fact, the library will also be available Saturday as well. Goshen is also offering free admission to Shanklin Park Pool Thursday through Saturday.
Officials are also concerned about smog, which is exacerbated by the heat and makes it harder for certain people to breathe, including the very young, the elderly and people with asthma or lung diseases.

The National Weather Service estimates that more than 100 local heat records will fall on Saturday, though most won't be daily highs but record-high nightly lows.

Greg Carbin, forecast branch chief for the weather service's Weather Prediction Center, says the heat wave will likely be "short and searing."
