South Bend Residents Give Input On City's Police Vehicle Pursuit Policy

South Bend residents gave their input Tuesday night on the City’s police vehicle pursuit policy.

This was the fourth in a series of seven meetings to give input on police practices.

A common concern brought up by people at the meeting was that the City’s vehicle pursuit policy is too vague. Some also say it’s too difficult to tell the difference between a vehicle pursuit and responding to a call.

South Bend Fraternal Order of Police President Harvey Mills says each situation is different and it’s up to the officer and their supervisor to decide when a pursuit is appropriate.

“What I’m really interested in is educating the public as to why we do the things that we do and the policies that we do have in place to protect officers and civilians,” Mills said.

Mills also said video footage from vehicle pursuits are reviewed internally each month to hold officers accountable.

The policy was criticized last year after Erica Flores died when her vehicle was hit by an officer.

The next meeting will review police training. It’s on Thursday, September 5th at the Charles Black Community Center.
