Today the School City of Mishawaka shared a letter with families regarding school closures.
The letter is below.
The safety of our students, staff, and families remains a top priority. Public health officials expect the virus to continue spreading and closing schools is an important way to slow down the process. As a result, School City of Mishawaka is announcing the closure of all school buildings and the utilization of an altered student schedule beginning, Monday, March 16, 2020 through Friday, March 27, 2020. Students are not to report to school buildings on these days.
Recess Day = No school for students
Remote Learning Day = Students do not report to school; directions will be made available via mishawakaschools.com by 9am on each specific remote learning day
On March 13, 2020, all SCM teachers instructed their students to take home materials so we are prepared for any changes and have the ability to provide learning opportunities in the event of students not being at school.
Elementary materials: HMH myBook and Ready Mathematics Practice and Problem Solving Book
JYMS materials: Chromebook and HMH Into Literature book
MHS materials: Chromebook
Please assist us in ensuring your student takes care of these materials. If your student was absent or unable to get the materials, additional guidance will be made available via mishawakaschools.com prior to the first remote learning day.
This decision was not made lightly or without an understanding of the students and families who rely on schools for meals and other resources. As such, we will continue meal services. Prepared and packaged meals will be provided to any families free of cost and will be available at the following school sites: Battell, Beiger, Emmons, LaSalle, Liberty, Twin Branch, JYMS, and MHS from 11am-1pm Monday-Friday. Students who attend Hums and Bethel Kindergarten can pick up meals at any of the above school sites. Each school site will have signage indicating where families go to pick up meals. Families can drive up to the designated location and meals will be brought out to the family by SCM personnel.
This morning, in our daily communication with the St. Joseph County Department of Health (SJCDH), experts stressed that there are no positive test results of COVID-19 amongst any School City of Mishawaka staff or students. The number of confirmed cases in St. Joseph County remains at one and the risk of contracting COVID-19 remains low.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that when students are not in school, they should stay at home and not be in close contact with other children. The SJCDH advises all people to avoid mass gatherings, congregating in groups, and encourages social distances.
