South Bend Civic Opens Foegley Plaza; Shade, Murals To Come

The South Bend Civic Theatre cut the ribbon on it’s new outdoor space on Friday.

Foegley Plaza is on the Southwest corner of the Civic’s property, behind the theatre, where a house formerly stood.

The plaza is a simple brick patio for now that’s hooked up for full electricity and sound. It will be used for the theatre’s education program and some outdoor theatre performances, but will also be available for community events.

“As downtown is resurgent and really going and becoming more and more popular to just be," Aaron Nichols, the Executive Director of the Civic said. "We felt like this is one more way that that expansion can continue.”

Phase two will add shade sails so the area can be used on sunnier days. Phase three will be a series of murals on the walls. Nichols said they’ll be looking for regional artists to create those.

The South Bend Civic Theatre is holding an open house Saturday from 10- 2. Visitors can learn about the theatre’s programming and tour the facilities including Foegley Plaza.
