Ivy Tech Community College broke ground on a new 10,000 square foot training lab in Goshen Wednesday.
The iFlex Lab for Advanced Manufacturing and Automation was proposed just over a year ago, in July 2019. At the groundbreaking, Ivy Tech Chancellor David Balkin said it’s the fastest a building has ever been added to an Ivy Tech campus.
“We’re moving so fast, I’m thrilled that we’re able to squeeze in this groundbreaking before the building opens for classes,” Balkin said.
The progress supports the advancement of automation technology. The iFlex Lab will offer training in advanced automation, robotics technology and industrial maintenance.
Elkhart County Commissioner Suzie Weirick said that these skills will help prepare local workers for future industry.
“With an expectation that 54% of jobs are likely to be automated in the near future, our residents will have the opportunity to embrace the challenges that lay ahead as jobs become more automated,” Weirick added.
The iFlex lab is scheduled to be fully commissioned by August 2021.
