Goshen Introduces Resident ID Plan

Goshen’s Center for Healing & Hope, or CHH, encourages city residents to apply for resident identification cards. The organization will begin application meetings  for the cards December first.

The aim of the Goshen Resident ID cards, or GRID cards, is to help all residents of the city have a proper form of identification.

While the cards are not intended to replace an official state identification, and cannot be used to vote or as a driver’s licence, they can be used to open bank and utility accounts, pick up prescription medications, and even offer benefits, such as discounts from local businesses.

CHH board member Richard Aguirre said lack of proper identification is an issue that affects the elderly, the homeless, and the formerly incarcerated. He says it’s not just an issue specific to the immigrant community.

“I know some people will say we’re offering something to a group of people that doesn’t deserve it, this is still a good thing to do,” Aguirre said, “because you can still prove your identity and we’re helping people just  function here.”

The cost of the card will be 25 dollars or less depending on age.

To apply for the cards, residents will need to provide two different forms of identification and proof of current residency within Goshen city limits. The cards will typically arrive two weeks after successful completion of the application process.
