La Casa de Amistad in South Bend announced Monday it will move into a new building roughly five times the size of the building it has now. It's leaders hope this expansion allows the nonprofit to have a larger outreach and accomadate the growing Latino population in Michiana.
La Casa is calling this expansion the “El Sueño” project.
The project requires about $3.25 million and the non-profit has raised close to $2 million so far.
Juan Constantino is the development coordinator for La Casa. He said the amount of clients they have has doubled since the organization’s start and most of its programs are completely filled.
“The needs of the Latinx and immigrant community are continuously growing so we’re at a point where we need to grow and have enough room to continue to grow.”
The current office is roughly 8,000 square feet. The new center at 3423 S Michigan St. is 41,000 square feet. Constantino said the new location will make it easier for people coming from Elkhart, Plymouth, Warsaw and other areas.
La Casa hopes to break ground this summer and move into the new space in early 2021.
Constantino said La Casa doesn’t know yet what it will do with it’s old space.
