Elkhart officials say their proposed Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area will make it easier to take alcoholic drinks in approved cups from participating bars and restaurants outdoors, especially during events like Jazz Fess and Art Walk.

The money comes to the state from the Lilly Endowment, as part of Indiana's regional approach to economic development launched under former Gov. Eric Holcomb.

Elkhart’s River District is getting more parking, thanks to an $8 million forgivable loan from the city.

The city of Elkhart says the River District's growing housing density, combined with big events at the Aquatic Center, is making parking hard to find in the city's core.

The local chain reached a deal with the city of Elkhart and a developer to build the store before selling out to Grand Rapids-based SpartanNash in 2018.
