WASHINGTON (AP) — A Senate panel has easily advanced President Joe Biden's nomination of Pete Buttigieg to be transportation secretary, setting up a final confirmation vote for a key role in Biden's push to rebuild the nation's infrastructure and confront climate change. The Commerce Committee approved the nomination of the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor on a 21-3 vote. Buttigieg's nomination heads to the full Senate, where a vote could happen this week. Buttigieg would be the first openly gay person confirmed by the Senate to a Cabinet post.

BREAKING: Biden To Tap Buttigieg For Transportation Secretary

Dec 15, 2020

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to pick former South Bend, Indiana, mayor Pete Buttigieg to head the transportation department. That's according to three people familiar with the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday to avoid preempting the president-elect's announcement. The 38-year-old Buttigieg was one of Biden's rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination. He was a breakout star of the primaries, sharing victory in the nation's first caucus with Bernie Sanders. He suspended his campaign before Super Tuesday and endorsed Biden.

Biden Won Michigan With Surge In Cities, Suburbs

Nov 7, 2020

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Joe Biden reclaimed Michigan for Democrats with a surge of support in urban regions like Detroit and Grand Rapids, offsetting high turnout in rural and exurban areas for President Donald Trump. Biden's 146,000-vote margin, 2.7 percentage points, was powered by gains in big, vote-rich counties such as Oakland near Detroit and Kent, which includes Grand Rapids — amid a record 5.5 million people casting ballots statewide. Biden won Oakland by 14 points, besting Hillary Clinton's 8-point edge in 2016.

FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Former President Barack Obama is campaigning in Michigan with Joe Biden, and he calls his former vice president his "brother." Obama also is accusing President Donald Trump of failing to take the coronavirus pandemic and his office seriously. Democrats are leaning on America's first Black president to energize Black voters in battleground Michigan on the final weekend of the 2020 campaign. Obama and Biden held drive-in rallies in Flint and Detroit. Turnout must be strong in those two predominantly Black cities to swing the state away from Trump.

WASHINGTON (AP) —  9:50 p.m.

President Donald Trump’s main doctor says in a health update that the medical team treating the president is “cautiously optimistic,” but also notes that the president is “not yet out of the woods.”

The latest assessment came Saturday night from Navy Commander Dr. Sean Conley. He reported that Trump had been up and around at his medical suite during the day and had been conducting business.

Medical experts say the disease caused by the virus, COVID-19, can become more dangerous as the body responds to the infection over time.

Trump is expected to remain at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for several more days. In a video Saturday from his hospital quarters, Trump says he is feeling better and hopes to “be back soon.”
