Elkhart Municipal Airport Receives More Than $1 Million From FAA

The Elkhart Municipal Airport received more than $1 million from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The money will go towards the second phase of construction for a new fence. It will extend underground to stop animals from digging under and it will be taller than the old fence.

Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese said the new fence will have safety features that the old fence lacked.

“The fence that’s actually going to be replaced is about 40 years old.
It gets hit quite often, largely during the winter because of vehicles
just sliding off of the adjacent roads,” he said.

The fencing project was originally being paid by the City budget but will now be funded by the grant.

Funding comes from part of the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program.

The Elkhart Municipal Airport has received almost $3 million in grants from the FAA over the past several years.

Phase two of construction is set to begin this Fall.
