St. Joseph County, IN Sees Increase In COVID-19 Cases

Justin Hicks / WVPE Public Radio

St. Joseph County and City of South Bend Officials gave an update to the local COVID-19 response during a virtual press conference Friday.

Deputy Health Officer Mark Fox says the County is starting to see an uptickin COVID-19 cases.

He says that could be the result of several different factors, one being reopening.

“There is a real increase in cases and likely is attributed to caution fatigue or general increased public interaction and commercial activity contributing to it.”

He says testing capacity hasn't grown enough to be attributed to the increase in positive COVID-19 cases.

Fox says in order to prevent a further spike in cases, residents should continue social distancing, hand washing, and wearing face masks.

He says businesses can help by following CDC guidelines and orders from the county and state.

Fox says the County Health Department has received a few complaints regarding local businesses not following guidelines. The department followed up some complaints so far, including six complaints Friday.
