The play, set by Čapek “in the future,” takes place at the island manufacturing facility of Rossum’s Universal Robots, which produces synthetic humanoid laborers who are rapidly taking over the world’s jobs. Nomad’s adaptation moves the setting to a nebulous past on an alternate Earth. There, Helena Glory, representative of an organization called the Humanity League, pleads her case for the humane treatment of robots to Rossum’s CEO, Harry Domin. Although Domin and his managers are initially resistant to Helena’s cause, one eventually breaks ranks to join her in helping the robots, even to their own detriment.

A prescient tale about artificial intelligence, as well as an examination of class and what it means to be human, R.U.R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots remains as relevant as when it was first performed over 100 years ago in the aftermath of World War I and the advent of mass production.

Ride into history with Saint Mary’s Theatre’s production of The Book Women by Rachel Bublitz. In the midst of the Great Depression, in a community crushed by the collapse of coal, and isolated by the very mountains they call home, a group of determined librarians take to their horses to reach the people of Eastern Kentucky. With a dedication equal to the US Postal Service, these “Book Women’’ deliver more than the books and magazines they carry in their saddlebags. They bring hope. They bring dreams. They bring the promise that if we support one another, tomorrow will be better.

Harvey “Ole Harv” Stauffer is a legendary blues broadcaster, musician, and educator who has hosted The Blues Revue on WVPE since 1983, making it one of the longest-running public radio blues programs in the United States. A recipient of the prestigious Keeping the Blues Alive Award from the The Blues Foundation in 2012, he was also inducted into both the Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations Hall of Fame and the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame in 2024. Through more than four decades of broadcasting, performing, and blues education, Ole Harv has become one of the Midwest’s most respected ambassadors of blues music.

Southside Denny (Denny Snyder) is an award winning blues guitarist, singer-songwriter, and composer whose career spans more than four decades. A recipient of the Ole Harv Award for Lifetime Promotion of Blues Music, he represented Indiana at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, earned third place at the Montréal Grand Prix de la Guitare, and has performed with or opened for legends including Ray Charles, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Luther Allison, and Taj Mahal. With 11 albums to his credit, Southside Denny continues to captivate audiences with his masterful guitar work and deep roots in the Chicago and Michiana blues traditions.

The Naghash Ensemble weaves together the earthy spirituality of Armenian sacred song, the richness of new classical composition and contemporary global influences.

Featuring three remarkable female vocalists alongside master instrumentalists on duduk, oud, dhol and piano, the ensemble performs original music by Armenian-American composer John Hodian inspired by the poetry of the 15th-century Armenian mystic and priest Mkrtich Naghash.

Rooted in ancient spiritual traditions yet shaped by a modern musical language, their work transcends cultural and stylistic boundaries, creating an experience that is both timeless and deeply moving. Blending folk traditions, classical form, and improvisational energy, The Naghash Ensemble offers audiences a powerful journey of sound, emotion, and connection across centuries and cultures.

Vocalist and storyteller Ana Everling crafts a sonic bridge between ancestral tradition and avant-garde expression, centering her work on the reclamation of a Romanian cultural heritage within the Republic of Moldova once targeted for systemic erasure.

Her research restores the voices of composers censored for expressing their Romanian identity too overtly, weaving their lost works into original compositions that pulse with modern improvisation and live vocal looping.
