Goshen Community School officials have announced that two upcoming varsity games for the football team will be canceled after a player tested positive for COVID-19. The game this coming Friday against Mishawaka and the game Sept. 11 against Northwood will not be played.

On Wednesday, September 2, 2020 Goshen Community Schools (GCS) administration was informed
that a Goshen High School (GHS) football student-athlete had tested positively for COVID-19. The
positive case was reported to the Elkhart County Health Department (ECHD) by the GHS school nurse
as per GCS COVID-19 procedures.
Following discussion among Dr. Steven Hope, GCS Interim Superintendent; Susan Stiffney, RN,
Director of Human Resource Services and GCS Safety Officer, Lori Martin Executive Assistant to the
Superintendent/PR; Dr. Barry Younghans, GHS Principal; Larry Kissinger, GHS Athletic Director;
Wendy Swallow, RN, GHS School Nurse/GCS School Nurse Coordinator; and Kyle Park, GHS Head
Football Coach, decisions have been made to ensure the safety of all students, teachers and staff as
well as the Goshen community.
Upon the recommendation of ECHD, Goshen High School JV and varsity football players will be
required to quarantine for 14 days, since the players are considered close contacts to the student-
athlete who tested positive. Quarantine means the players will not attend school, football practices, or
any other co-curricular activities during the 14-day quarantine.
The varsity football game scheduled for Friday, September 4, 2020 and the JV football game
scheduled for Saturday, September 5, 2020, will be canceled. More information about ticket refunds for
the GHS/Mishawaka football game will be released later.
After missing 5-10 days of scheduled practices, IHSAA rules require that student-athletes practice at
least 4 days upon return, prior to a competitive game. Since the GHS players will still be in quarantine
until late next week, the home football game with NorthWood, scheduled to be played on Friday,
September 11, 2020, will also be canceled.
The freshmen football players are not identified to be close contacts, so they may continue to hold
practices and play their games as scheduled.
Coach Park is speaking with his student-athletes this evening and he will convey the information listed
above to his team. GCS knows how disappointing this must be for the student-athletes who have
worked hard to be ready to compete and have looked forward to representing their school. We hope
that the community will continue to support the JV and varsity football players during the next 14 days
through emails or phone calls, but not visits!

Goshen (GCS) que un estudiante-deportista de fútbol de la preparatoria Goshen High School (GHS, por
sus siglas en inglés) había dado positivo en la prueba de COVID-19. El caso positivo fue informado al
Departamento de Salud del Condado Elkhart (ECHD, por sus siglas en inglés) por la enfermera escolar de GHS según los procedimientos GCS COVID-19.
Luego de conversaciones entre Steven Hope, inspector escolar interino de GCS, Susan Stiffney, directora
de servicios de recursos humanos y oficial de seguridad de GCS, Lori Martin, asistente ejecutiva del
inspector escolar, Barry Younghans, director escolar de GHS, Larry Kissinger, director deportivo de GHS; Wendy Swallow, enfermera escolar de GHS y coordinadora de enfermeras escolares de GCS y Kyle Park, entrenador en jefe de fútbol americano de GHS, se han tomado decisiones para garantizar la seguridad de todos los estudiantes, maestros y personal escolar, así como de la comunidad de Goshen.
Por recomendación del ECHD, los jugadores de fútbol americano Varsity y JV de GHS deberán estar en
cuarentena durante 14 días, ya que los jugadores se consideran contactos cercanos del estudiante-
deportista que dio positivo. Cuarentena significa que los jugadores no asistirán a la escuela,
entrenamientos de fútbol, ni a ninguna otra actividad cocurricular durante los 14 días de cuarentena.
Se cancelará el juego de fútbol Varsity programado el viernes, 4 de septiembre de 2020 y el juego de fútbol americano JV programado para el sábado, 5 de septiembre de 2020. Más adelante se dará a conocer más información sobre reembolsos de boletos del juego de fútbol GHS/Mishawaka.
Después de perder de 5 a 10 días de entrenamientos programados, las reglas de la IHSAA requieren que
los estudiantes-deportistas practiquen al menos 4 días después de su regreso, antes de un juego
competitivo. Dado que los jugadores de GHS seguirán en cuarentena hasta finales de la próxima semana,
el partido de fútbol en casa con NorthWood, programado para el viernes, 11 de septiembre de 2020,
también se cancelará.
Los jugadores de fútbol de noveno grado no están identificados como contactos cercanos, por lo que
pueden continuar realizando entrenamientos y jugando sus juegos según lo programado.
