For the first time, Elkhart County Emergency Management Director Jennifer Tobey says she's seeking donations to help June 11 storm victims as the county awaits word from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security are now conducting joint preliminary damage assessments in several counties, including Elkhart.

Power outages from Thursday’s storms stretched into the weekend for some residents. Indiana Michigan Power says damage from fallen trees in the South Bend and Elkhart areas took additional time to address.

One person was reportedly hurt, when the tornado destroyed a garage and caused roof damage at a home on Hyde Park Drive.

The Elkhart County Commissioners on Monday agreed to let the Local Emergency Planning Committee apply for a $30,000 Hazardous Material Emergency Preparedness Grant from the state for 2026.
