St. Joseph County prosecutors have asked a judge to detain 53-year-old Chad Bean until his bond hearing because he's a threat to his victims and the community, after a 2001 kidnapping and confinement conviction in which he used his baby as a shield as a police K-9 tried to bring him down.

Police say the armed suspect held three adults and two children hostage for over five hours Sunday before SWAT officers negotiated the safe release of all hostages, and took the suspect into custody after an officer shot him.

The Virginia-based Institute for Justice says it next will probably appeal South Bend homeowner Amy Hadley's Fifth Amendment case to the Supreme Court.
