Elkhart City Council on Monday night unanimously approved a climate resolution aimed at reducing carbon emissions and preparing the city for the long-term impacts of climate change.

The resolution commits the city to developing a Climate Action Plan, appointing a Sustainability Officer, and increasing community engagement around environmental issues. It also highlights a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting resilience through sustainable infrastructure and policy.

The initiative was led by Green Heart, a student group at Elkhart High School. Junior Lorelei England helped shepherd the resolution through the process after it was first introduced by former students three years ago.

“The resolution is basically an outline for steps forward for Elkhart city government on what to do to combat rising climate change and other environmental stressors,” England said.

She added that the group’s motivation was rooted in concern for the future.

“We want to make sure that kids can worry about messing around, doing regular teenager stuff instead of worrying about their climate in the future,” she said.

England said the students drew inspiration from nearby cities like Goshen and South Bend, which had passed similar measures. Elkhart’s version, she said, is designed to ensure long-term oversight of environmental efforts through the creation of the Sustainability Officer role.

Several council members praised the students for their persistence and civic engagement. Theologian and climate activist Sarah Nahar also spoke at the meeting, commending the group’s leadership and the council’s decision to act.

The resolution sets a deadline of three years for completing the Climate Action Plan.
