Mishawaka is ready to run its first water lines north to serve the Microsoft data center site in Granger as well as other development along the Capital Avenue corridor.
St. Joseph County economic development director Bill Schalliol on Tuesday will ask county commissioners to award a $6 million contract to low bidder HRP Construction. They’ll first extend water lines north up Bittersweet Road, from Day to Cleveland roads.
Schalliol says the county is serving as the project manager. Once the work is done they’ll turn the lines over to the city to own and operate. Microsoft is funding the extension.
“Obviously the water line isn’t being built for just one project so residents, potential additional developments along that corridor, could see the benefit of municipal utilities, so we think that’s a huge win for that part of the county,” Schalliol says.
Eventually Schalliol says homes on and near Bittersweet will have the option of connecting to the water but that’s a couple years away still. Other infrastructure, like a water tower and lift stations, must first be built to pressurize that water.
