A conversation with Museum Director Ashley Hughes about the museum's upcoming Elkhart Rail 175 Anniversary Celebration

Mohawk No. 3001 has been housed in Elkhart since the 1980s, but its ownership has been transferred to the Fort Wayne Railroad, in the hopes that it’ll be able to get it running again.

"Elkhart’s journey alongside the railroad has programmed this whole entire area to be more conscious of the dangers that come with trains," said Andrew Medford.

The Freight Street District Initiative was among the recipients of the state’s READI Arts & Culture grants, funded by the Lilly Endowment.

As Elkhart develops the area south of downtown, it’s looking for some financial help from the READI Arts and Culture Initiative.

It was October 3, 1851, when the first train arrived in Elkhart. Now, the city is planning a series of events to mark 175 years of rail service.

Locomotive No. 3001, the centerpiece of the National New York Central Railroad Museum in Elkhart, is set to receive new life through a partnership between the city of Elkhart and the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.
