GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) — The murder trial of a man charged in a 2011 home invasion that left a Goshen College biology professor dead has been moved to next year.

Twenty-four-year-old Winston Corbett was set to stand trial Aug. 26 on murder and attempted murder charges, but an Elkhart County judge on Thursday rescheduled the trial to Jan. 6, 2020.

Corbett was arrested last year in the October 2011 home invasion attack that killed Goshen College biology professor James Miller and injured his wife, Linda.

Man Wanted For Iowa Murder Captured In Mishawaka

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Another man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a teenager in northeast Des Moines.

Marcus Brown was captured in Mishawaka, Indiana, and has been returned to Des Moines. He is being held on a $1-million cash bond. He is being held on a preliminary count of first degree murder charge in addition to a first degree robbery charge.

PAW PAW, Mich. (AP) — A Florida prison inmate has been charged with murder in the strangling of a woman in southwestern Michigan more than three decades ago.

Prosecutors charged 49-year-old Robert James Waite last week in the killing of 59-year-old Wilda Wilkinson of Bangor in July 1986.

Michigan State Police say they matched DNA found on Wilkinson's clothes to Waite.

Detectives say Waite confessed when they interviewed him in April.

Authorities say Waite knew specific details about the slaying.

CENTREVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan man already serving life in prison for a woman's killing has now been given a second life sentence without the chance of parole for the slaying of his ex-wife's husband.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office announced that today Rahim Brumfield, 21, appeared before a St. Joseph County Superior Court judge and was sentenced to 60 years in the January 18, 2018 homicide of Tysiona Crawford.

At the time of her death, Crawford was 17 years old and a student at Washington High School in South Bend.

Brumfield was sentenced to 55 years for her murder and 5 years for a firearm sentencing enhancement, for an aggregate sentence of 60 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.

Today the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office released the following information on the sentencing of Barbara Brewster for murder:

St. Joseph County –Today Barbara Brewster, 56, appeared before a St. Joseph CountySuperior Court Judge and was sentenced to 60 years in the Indiana Department ofCorrection for Murder. Specifically, she was sentenced for the June 1988 Murder ofpregnant Miriam Rice.She was sentenced today after a jury found her guilty of Murder on June 12, 2019.The statutory sentencing range for Murder at the time the crime was committed was 40 to60 years.George Kearney, 78, was also charged in connection with Miriam Rice’s death, and pledguilty on March 11, 2019, to Murder, without the benefit of a plea agreement. He passedaway in the custody of the St. Joseph County Jail on March 24, 2019, before he could besentenced or a judgement of conviction entered. However, on March 27, 2019, the Courtper statute entered a judgment of conviction against George Kearney for Murder, but notedthat his death made sentencing moot and declined to enter any sentence for that conviction.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A former NFL football running back arrested in Las Vegas on suspicion of child abuse now faces murder charges after the 5-year-old girl died.

KLAS-TV reports Las Vegas police arrested 28-year-old Cierre Wood on Wednesday and added the murder charge Thursday. He originally was charged with first-degree child abuse and neglect.

The Clark County Coroner's Office says 5-year-old La-Rayah Davis died as a result of child abuse.

Police also have charged Amy Taylor with child abuse and neglect.

St. Joseph Co. Jail

Today the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office charged Marshun D. Lloyd, 25, with Murder in the March 10, 2019, homicide of Ashley Starr.

Lloyd was ordered held without bond and remains in the custody of the St. Joseph County Jail.

He is scheduled to appear before a Magistrate tomorrow afternoon, March 29th, at 1:00 p.m. for his arraignment

Charging documents indicate that Lloyd was Starr's ex-boyfriend. Starr was found in her home on Huron Circle where she died of multiple stab wounds. Investigators say Starr's blood was found inside Lloyd's car.

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (AP) - A man convicted in the fatal shooting of his wife inside a marijuana grow room in their southwestern Michigan home has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.
 
John Lewis was given the mandatory punishment Monday in a Berrien County courtroom after a jury in February found him guilty of murder .
 

Authorities say he killed 55-year-old Carla Lewis in 2017 in their Niles Township home near the state's border with Indiana and then called 911, saying two men had broken into the home, killer her and fled in her car.
 

Arrest In Michigan Cold Case In Van Buren County

PAW PAW, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a man in connection with a 1986 slaying in southwestern Michigan.
 
    Michael Leon Curry, 51, was formally charged with felony murder Monday in Van Buren County District Court in the death of Wilda Wilkinson, 59, of Bangor. 
 
     The judge denied Curry bond. He's being held in the Van Buren County Jail.
 
     Michigan State Police say Curry lived near Wilkinson at the time of the crime. 

UPDATE: SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A judge has convicted a man who died in jail after pleading guilty to murder in the 1988 beating death of a pregnant South Bend woman.

St. Joseph Superior Court Judge John Marnocha on Wednesday accepted the plea that 78-year-old George Kearney entered on March 11.

Kearney was scheduled to be sentenced Friday, but he died Sunday in jail. Prosecutors say Kearney had been terminally ill and that his health had deteriorated over the past week.

Kearney admitted killing 28-year-old Miriam Rice, who was abducted June 24, 1988, while walking her dog in a park. Her body was found about a week later obscured by foliage.

Kearney's former girlfriend, 56-year-old Barbara Brewster also was charged with murder and is due to stand trial in June.
