The South Bend Community School Corporation received a $5.5 million federal grant to help educate, recruit, and retain teachers.
Qualified students will earn their bachelor's degree from IU South Bend and have their master’s degree paid for in exchange for a three year commitment to teach in South Bend.
This program is meant to help with teacher shortages in the district. South Bend Schools have resorted to filling teaching jobs with people who have emergency teaching certificates.
Terri Hebert is the executive director of the Teacher Preparation Program at IU South Bend. She said this collaboration is a win-win.
“Our students get this extra training and experience as well as a masters and South Bend School Corporation gets high qualified teachers that will be able to step into those roles.”
Participants will be recruited from the IUSB Education program first. If there are still open spots, student teachers from other universities can apply.
Up to 20 teachers could participate in this program each year. The program will begin in January. The grant will last for five years.
