South Bend Working On Budget For 2021 With COVID-19 In Mind

Justin Hicks

The City of South Bend is working on a budget for 2021 that reflects some of the financial hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The proposed budget would reduce spending by 4 million dollars compared to the 2020 budget… that includes cutting 15 full-time employee positions.

Mayor James Mueller said in a press release that the City will have to “chart a new course to navigate the economic downturn caused by the pandemic.”

Mueller presented the proposed budget to the City’s Common Council during a meeting this week.

It was the first in a series of eight budget hearings that will take place each Wednesday before final adoption in October.

The proposed budget outlines six goals which include, support economic recovery, build reliable infrastructure, expand access to opportunity, reform public safety systems, rebuild vibrant neighborhoods, and protect the vulnerable.
