With highs staying below freezing, warming centers are open across Michiana. Libraries and community spaces are offering a safe place to get out of the cold.

For the first time since its 2021 renovation, the St. Joseph County Public Library's main site downtown South Bend will close Jan. 5-9 for elevator repairs. Its attached Community Learning Center will remain open to provide warmth for the homeless and limited library services.

With temperatures dropping into the single digits and wind chills below zero, warming centers across Michiana are opening their doors to help residents stay safe.

Sub zero temperatures have closed schools, businesses, and government offices. Warming shelters have been stood up for vulnerable populations.

Wind chill values are expected to be as low as -10 degrees through most of Wednesday. In response, several warming shelters have opened throughout Elkhart County to combat the cold.
