NASA: The road to Mars passes through Indiana

NASA and other major aerospace representatives celebrated South Bend’s role in supplying specialized parts for spacecraft with a presentation and panel discussion at Manufacturing Technologies Inc., or MTI. The city is one of 12 in Indiana that manufactures parts for the space program.  
 

Former astronaut Brian Duffy said he’s depended on parts made in South Bend a few times.

 

South Bend presents new parental leave plan

South Bend Common Council members will consider the city’s first plan for paid parental leave.

The city of South Bend may institute new fully-paid parental leave, in addition to its already existing medical leave, to full-time city employees. The 6 weeks paid leave would be available to any qualified employee - male or female - designated as a primary caregiver.  If both are city employees, both may still take off at the same time.

The Notre Dame trail, the long walk from Vincennes to South Bend to commemorate the University’s 175th anniversary finished Saturday.

 

Most of the 32 pilgrims that make up the core group are Notre Dame Alumni who returned to Indiana from across the country to participate in the historic walk.

The 300 miles recreate the walk Father Edward Sorin and his followers took in 1842 to found the University.

Donnelly makes stop in South Bend

Senator Joe Donnelly stopped at the Charles Martin Youth Center in South Bend as part of his “Hoosier Highways” RV tour. The 6-day tour is part of Donnelly’s campaign launch, in which he travels the state and listens to voter concerns, as well as shares what he considers accomplishments of his first term in the Senate.

Donnelly said he  is happy to be back in his home region.

He said that the one thing he has learned in his time in  Washington, is that he can work with anybody.

Indiana State Treasurer Kelly Mitchell promoted a new program to South Bend residents that allows someone with a disability, or a parent of a child with a disability, to create a savings account with special tax advantages. Mitchell, along with staff were available to answer questions regarding the program at the Logan Center following the presentation.
 

An overflow crowd  of 250  people worshipped together at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. James at the “Interfaith Service of Prayer for Compassion and Justice for Migrants, Immigrants, & Refugees.”

Lauren Nassau of South Bend, a member of the Temple Beth El synagogue explained why she came.

On Thursday, January 5, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg announced his candidacy to chair the Democratic National Committee.

WVPE's Jon Huber spoke with Jason Critchlow, Chairman of the St. Joseph County Democratic Party, about the announcement. The first question was, "What does this mean for South Bend?"

The Salvation Army Kroc Center and 88.1 WVPE present South Bend Stories in celebration of the city's 150 year anniversary. These stories are produced in the Kroc Center Recording Studio as told by individuals in the community, for the community. New Stories will be aired weekly every Monday at 7:45 AM and 12:30 PM on WVPE throughout 2015.

The Pokagon Band says it wants a full-fledged casino, but federal law allows it to open a facility limited to electronic bingo machines with no state input.
