The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office has announced charges against one man following a deadly weekend shooting at a South Bend gas station.

Raymond M. Dotson, Jr. is alleged to have used a semiautomatic weapon to kill a man he got into an argument with. The man who died was carrying an "air soft" toy gun. Police say surveillance video shows the whole thing.

You never know what you might see when walking along the St. Joseph River in South Bend. Anne Brown captured this image on the morning of October 13th. Anne says she was walking near the South Bend Farmer's Market when her husband, Dean Alvis, spotted a double-crested cormorant sharing a log with two large turtles. She says Dean joked that it brings to mind the famous painting "Washington Crossing the Delaware!”

The weather is getting colder here in Michiana but not everyone has a warm place to call home. A group of women are using theater to show people what it’s like being homeless in South Bend.

Residents crowded into a community center in the Near Northwest Neighborhood over the weekend to watch a theater production called “Tracy Talks.” It was a stage reading written by someone who had experienced homlessness in South Bend.

Six sculptures by University of Notre Dame professor, Rev. Austin Collins, have been installed in roundabouts in South Bend. 

The university says it's a pilot public art program to add color and vibrancy to the city. 

The sculptures are along Michigan Street at Bartlett and Marion streets on the north side and at Chippewa Avenue on the south side.

According to the university, the sculptures were installed by the city with support from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County.

The city of South Bend cut the ribbon on the new Leeper Park playground on Monday.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg was in town this morning to help some fourth graders from Madison STEAM Academy cut the ribbon on the new playground. Buttigieg said now it’s up to the next generation.

More than 500 community members crowded into the Pentecostal Cathedral Church of God in Christ Sunday afternoon for Faith in Indiana’s Peacemaker Summit. The event was in response to the fatal police shooting of Eric Logan and the rise of gun violence in South Bend.

Faith leaders publicly appealed to elected officials to fund initiatives including a national program called the Peacemaker Fellowship. Council President Tim Scott says the city is allocating $350,000 for a Group Violence Intervention Project.

Fetal Remains Found At Late Doc’s Home Moved To Indiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — More than 2,200 sets of preserved fetal remains found in the Illinois garage of a late Indiana abortion doctor have been returned to Indiana.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Indiana officials are going to start negotiating with a Native American tribe over allowing expanded gambling at its South Bend casino.

The Michigan-based Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians last month asked Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb to open talks on an agreement in order to possibly add live table games, such as blackjack and roulette, and sports betting at its Four Winds South Bend Casino.

Two 16-year-olds have died in separate shootings.

The first occurred Friday night in the 1,800 block of Sampson in South Bend.  The victim is identified as Curtis A. Frazier, Jr.

Friday South Bend police responded to a call of shots fired around 9:35pm and found two people with gunshot wounds. Frazier was dead at the scene. The other victim, Makyi E. Toliver, 18, of South Bend survived.

South Bend, Mishawaka, and St. Joseph County officials discussed a proposal Thursday night to fund the county’s 911 Dispatch Center by pulling money from other agencies, like local libraries, public transit and the South Bend Airport.

Black Lives Matter South Bend held a meeting Tuesday night to discuss their expectations for the citizen that will sit on the City’s Board of Public Safety.

South Bend residents gave their input Tuesday night on the City’s police vehicle pursuit policy.

This was the fourth in a series of seven meetings to give input on police practices.

The South Bend Common Council voted against a rezoning petition that would have paved the way for a new apartment complex for chronically homeless people.

The South Bend Heritage Foundation was planning to develop the site on Washington Street. By 2021 it would have hosted a 20 unit permanent supportive housing apartment building. 

After hours of testimony and public comment the board ultimately decided not to rezone.

The University of Notre Dame with support from the City of South Bend broke ground Monday on the new Robinson Community Learning Center. 

The Robinson Community Learning Center is a space where South Bend residents can take classes, join clubs, and listen to lectures.

South Bend residents gathered once again on Tuesday night to give input on police practices - this time on the use of force policy. 

Attendees were given hypothetical scenarios a police officer might encounter on the job. They discussed what actions the officer should take and how much force would be appropriate in each situation.

With more funding from state sources the city of South Bend is no longer planning to open a gateway center for people who are homeless. The city is now planning for more permanent supportive housing.

The gateway center was going to be a triage for those experiencing homelessness. It would house people temporarily and transition them into more stable situations. But the city only had the funding for 18 units of permanent supportive housing.

The city of South Bend and the University of Notre Dame broke ground Monday on a joint project in Seitz Park.

For the city, the groundbreaking is about the next phase in the My South Bend Parks and Trails project. For the University, it’s about what’s underground.

 

A 2.5 megawatt hydroelectric plant, powered by the St. Joe River, will be installed under Seitz Park. Once finished, the plant will provide 7 percent of Notre Dame’s power.

A writing workshop in South Bend Saturday morning is designed specifically for kids on the autism spectrum.

Write Differently is a creative writing workshop catered to students with autism in grades three through 12.

A bench in a neighborhood in South Bend is providing residents with more than just a place to relax. 

The Laughing Bench at 911 Portage Avenue is meant to give people a sense of community. It’s said that if you sit on the bench with another person, you can’t help but laugh.

A group protested against a mega-industrial development west of South Bend at the City-County building and the County Council meeting last night.

The Indiana Enterprise Center would redevelop a large area between South Bend and New Carlisle. Twenty-two thousand acres that is now mostly farms.

Protestors from the Open Spaces and Agricultural Alliance of St. Joseph County say the land has already been developed...to grow food.
