Gretchen Carlson, a former CBS News and Fox News journalist, will visit the University of Notre Dame to talk about legislative victories that lifted workers’ voices.

Carlson became an internationally recognized advocate for women’s rights after her bold actions against Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes in 2016 helped pave the way for the #MeToo movement. She is the co-founder of Lift Our Voices, a nonprofit organization that works to end silencing mechanisms in the workplace that keep toxic issues secret.

Carlson will participate in a fireside chat with Jennifer Mason McAward, director of the Klau Institute for Civil and Human Rights in the Keough School of Global Affairs and an associate professor of law at Notre Dame Law School.

Our Home Grown Series presents a tribute to Bill Evans featuring our very own Merrimans’ Play-House Players, with Titus Arko on piano, Mary Merriman on bass, and Stephen Merriman on drums. The trio shares a love for Bill Evans and the music he wrote and performed and will explore some of his lesser-known works alongside more familiar selections.

Together, they are drawn to the interaction between piano, bass, and drums that became such an important part of the Bill Evans trio sound—jazz as a process of creating and interacting in the moment, with each instrument contributing to the conversation, listening and responding to one another’s dynamics, ideas, and musical emotions as the music unfolds.

The play, set by Čapek “in the future,” takes place at the island manufacturing facility of Rossum’s Universal Robots, which produces synthetic humanoid laborers who are rapidly taking over the world’s jobs. Nomad’s adaptation moves the setting to a nebulous past on an alternate Earth. There, Helena Glory, representative of an organization called the Humanity League, pleads her case for the humane treatment of robots to Rossum’s CEO, Harry Domin. Although Domin and his managers are initially resistant to Helena’s cause, one eventually breaks ranks to join her in helping the robots, even to their own detriment.

A prescient tale about artificial intelligence, as well as an examination of class and what it means to be human, R.U.R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots remains as relevant as when it was first performed over 100 years ago in the aftermath of World War I and the advent of mass production.

Composer and pianist Kevin Fort joins guitarist Andy Brown in a program centered on original compositions from their forthcoming duo recording, Chiaroscuro (2026), alongside selected standards from the jazz tradition. Inspired in part by Bill Evans and Jim Hall's landmark recording Undercurrent, Chiaroscuro explores the expressive contrast between piano and guitar through a conversational musical dialogue balancing harmonic richness, melodic clarity, and collective improvisation. Featuring four original compositions by Fort, the project blends swing, bossa nova, blues, ballad, and waltz influences while presenting a contemporary artistic voice rooted in the intimacy of the piano-guitar duo.
